You can configure the Sidebar via Finder preferences to show only the items that you want.  For example, you don't have to stick with the default items under the 'Devices', 'Shared', 'Places', and 'Search For' headings.
Steps
  1. Launch Finder
  2. Click on the Finder Menu and then select Preferences
  3. Click the 'Sidebar' icon located in the top row
  4. Under 'Show these items in the Sidebar' check the items you wish to have shown in the Sidebar.
Note that as you're selecting or deselecting items, the Sidebar will automatically show or hide the items you have configured in Preferences.
