A May 17, 2006 article at the Wall Street Journal titled "How Apple's Store Strategy Beat the Odds" explains how the implementation and strategy of Apple Retail Stores have been successful.  It's a great read as it demonstrates that Apple's retail strategy to showcase its products is working.  I suppose it comes back to the phrase, "If you want something done right, do it yourself".
