Apple Updates MacBook Line to Intel Core 2 Duo

On Wednesday November 8, 2006, Apple Computer announced updates to the company's MacBook line of notebook computers.  The new models ship with Intel Core 2 Duo processors and deliver performance as high as 25 percent faster than the previous Core Duo models.

All new 2.0 GHz models offer twice the standard memory and greater storage capacity than the previous Core Duo models.  All models include a built-in iSight video camera for video conferencing, the MagSafe Power Adapter, Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.8, and iLife ‘06.

With prices starting at just $1,099, the new MacBook models continue to be available in three models. White 1.83 GHz and 2.0 GHz MacBook models, and a  black 2.0 GHz MacBook model.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing stated:

  • “MacBook has helped drive Apple’s notebook market share to over 10 percent in US retail, and the new MacBooks will be among this holiday season’s most exciting new products,”
  • “With Intel Core 2 Duo processors across the entire line, these new MacBooks are up to 25 percent faster than their predecessors.

Thanks to the latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, the new MacBooks are up to 25 percent faster than the previous Core Duo models and up to six times faster than the iBook.  The MagSafe Airline Adapter first debuted in the new MacBook Pro and is now included in the new MacBooks.  It allows easy use of a MacBook on an airplane by connecting to an in-seat power ports.

  • 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM expandable to 2GB
  • Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950

High-performance connectivity options include:

  • Built-in 10/100/1000 BASE-T Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking
  • Built-in AirPort Extreme
  • Built-in Bluetooth 2.0+EDR (Enhanced Data Rate)
  • One FireWire 400 port
  • Combo analog and optical digital audio input
  • Combo analog and optical digital audio output ports

Power features include:

  • Apple’s MagSafe Power Adapter
  • MagSafe Airline Adapter (optional, cost $59 US)

Usage features include:

  • Apple’s Sudden Motion Sensor (protects hard drive in case of a fall)
  • Scrolling TrackPad (for easy scrolling through web pages and large photographs)

Each new MacBook ships with iLife ‘06, Apple’s award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications featuring that include iPhoto, iMovie HD, iDVD, GarageBand and iWeb.  In addition to Mac OS x Tiger version 10.4.8, the models include Intel native versions of Apple's applications Safari, Mail, iCal, iChat AV, Front Row and Photo Booth.
