Apple released their fiscal 2008 fourth quarter earnings on Tuesday October 22 and reported that profits rose more than 26 percent to $1.14 billion on sales of $7.9 billion for the three-month period that ended on September 27, 2008.  Apple shipped 2,611,000 Macintosh computers during the quarter.

Over the course of the current week, Apple has released three new 'Get a Mac' television advertisements that attack Microsoft's recent $300 million 'I'm a PC' ad campaign.  The new ads are called 'Bean Counter', 'V Word' and 'Bake Sale'

At the onset of today's notebook event Apple CEO Steve Jobs quickly handed the presentation over to Tim Cook, Apple's Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO).  Cook gave a presentation titled, 'State of the Mac' which provided insight into Mac momentum.  Cook started off by stating that Apple is growing at 2-3 times the market growth rate. He then listed reasons why Apple believes that they are growing at this rate.

Apple today unveiled an all new MacBook family that redefines notebook design, and at the same time dramatically lowers the entry price for advanced notebook features including all-metal enclosures and pro-performance notebook graphics by $700 to make them far more affordable.

Apple will be conducting a special notebook event tomorrow where they are expected to unveil updates to the MacBook and MacBook Pro models.  For many, tomorrow can't come fast enough as the agony of holding out has been driving them crazy.

In an article posted at the Wall Street Journal Walt Mossberg highlights the newly released VMWare Fusion 2.0 and calls it "the better choice for running Windows on a Mac virtually."  He also indicates that in his testing, Fusion performs faster than Parallels.

In his report at Register Hardware, Tony Smith cites data from market research firm NPD shows that Apple's portable Macs grabbed 20 percent of the U.S. retail market for the months of July and August 2008.  The data demonstrates that Mac portable sales increased by 30 percent on a revenue basis and 35 percent on a unit basis.

According to data collected and metrics tracked by market research firm Net Applications, Apple's Mac OS market share has risen to 8.23 during September 2008.  The rise represents a year-over-year gain of 24.13 percent based on September 2007 when Mac OS market share was measured to be 6.63 percent.
